Fintech banks have gotten genuinely good — with some real limitations
The case for moving your checking account to a fintech bank used to be mostly about APY. Now it’s more complicated: some offer better UX than any traditional bank, but the weak points have become clearer too.
Chime: Best for Fee-Free Banking
Chime’s pitch is simple: no monthly fees, no minimum balance, no overdraft fees (up to $200 through SpotMe). Its 60,000+ fee-free ATM network (Allpoint and MoneyPass) beats most credit unions. Early direct deposit gets you paid 2 days before traditional payroll processing.
The limitation: no joint accounts, no cash deposits except at Walgreens (with fees), and customer service that’s definitively worse than a local credit union. Also not a real bank — deposits are held at Bancorp or Stride Bank. Fine for most purposes, worth knowing.
SoFi: Best All-In-One Package
SoFi became a real bank (SoFi Bank, N.A.) in 2022 and now offers 4.60% APY on savings, up to $2 million in FDIC insurance through partner banks, 2-day early paycheck, and a credit card that earns 2% cash back. The app experience is genuinely polished.
The catch: the high savings rate requires direct deposit. Without it, you get 1.20% APY — still better than a big bank, but not remarkable.
Ally: Best for Savings Discipline
Ally invented the savings “buckets” concept — sub-accounts within your savings that you label for different goals (vacation, car repair, down payment). This simple UX feature has real behavioral value. Their savings rate hovers around 4.20–4.35% APY with no minimums and no fees.
Ally also offers solid CDs, a decent investment account, and a cash-back debit card. The checking account APY (0.10–0.25%) is their weak spot.
Revolut: Best for International Travelers
Revolut’s Standard plan (free) gives you real interbank exchange rates with no markup on currency conversion up to $1,000/month. The Metal plan ($16.99/month) gives unlimited fee-free conversions and airport lounge access. For frequent international travelers, this easily beats any bank’s foreign transaction fees.
What Traditional Banks Still Win On
In-person cash handling, notary services, complex lending products (mortgages, business lines of credit), dispute resolution with a human in the room, and wire transfers with reliable same-day settlement. If you own property or run a business that handles cash, a regional bank or credit union relationship is still valuable.
