E-Commerce and Dropshipping: What Still Works After the Hype Cycle

Dropshipping is not dead. The easy version is dead.

The influencer-driven dropshipping craze of 2017–2021 — find a supplier on AliExpress, spin up a Shopify store, run Facebook ads, profit — has run into the wall of reality: CPM costs are 3–5x higher, AliExpress delivery times (3–4 weeks to the US) are competitively untenable against Amazon Prime, and the tactic has been copied to the point of commoditization.

The people still making money from e-commerce in 2024 are doing something different. Here’s what that looks like.

What Still Works: The Differentiation Approaches

Private label with domestic suppliers: Sourcing from US-based manufacturers or using a China freight forwarder that warehouses inventory stateside. Longer setup time, higher minimum order quantities (typically 100–500 units), but 7–14 day shipping that can compete with Prime. Platforms like Modalyst and Sprocket have curated US supplier networks.

POD (Print-on-Demand) with original designs: Printful, Printify, and Gelato let you sell custom-printed products (t-shirts, mugs, wall art, phone cases) with no upfront inventory. The margin is thinner (typically 30–50%), but there’s no capital at risk and no warehouse. Works best with a niche audience — a humor brand for nurses, a design aesthetic for a specific subculture — rather than generic “funny” merch.

TikTok Shop: TikTok’s in-app e-commerce platform launched in the US in 2023 and has generated genuine success stories for products with visual appeal. The organic reach available on TikTok for new accounts still dramatically exceeds what you can get on Instagram or Facebook without paid media.

The Tech Stack That Works

Shopify ($39–105/month) remains the best platform for serious stores. WooCommerce (free + hosting, $10–20/month) is competitive for cost-conscious sellers with WordPress experience. For print-on-demand: Etsy as the marketplace, Printify as the supplier. For ads: TikTok Ads are the best ROI for visual consumer products right now; Meta Ads are mature and harder to make profitable at small scale.

The Honest Numbers

A realistic first-year outcome for a serious dropshipping or POD store: 3–6 months to first profitable month, $1,000–$3,000 net profit in the first profitable year. Scaling beyond $5,000/month net requires either a genuinely differentiated product, a strong organic content presence (TikTok, Instagram), or significant paid media capital ($5,000+ to test).

  • Best platform: Shopify (stores), Etsy (marketplace, zero ad spend needed)
  • Best POD suppliers: Printful (quality), Printify (margins), Gelato (global)
  • Best US suppliers: Modalyst, Sprocket
  • Best organic acquisition: TikTok Shop
