Insurance Tech Is Finally Getting Good: What to Know Before You Renew

The insurance industry was one of the last holdouts against tech disruption. Not anymore.

For most of the 20th century, buying insurance meant sitting across a desk from an agent or spending 20 minutes on hold. Insurtech — the application of technology to insurance — has changed this, with genuinely better products in some categories and gimmicks in others.

Auto Insurance: The Telematics Revolution

Usage-based insurance (UBI) programs like Progressive’s Snapshot, State Farm’s Drive Safe & Save, and Root Insurance track your actual driving behavior — braking, acceleration, time of day, miles driven — and price your premium accordingly.

Safe drivers who avoid hard braking and late-night driving typically save 15–30% versus standard rates. Root is the most aggressive: they price almost entirely on driving behavior and have offered some customers 40–50% discounts versus traditional carriers. The catch: if you drive a lot or have habits like hard stops, you might pay more.

Renters and Homeowners Insurance: Lemonade vs. Traditional

Lemonade pioneered the AI-driven insurance claims experience: you record a video explaining your claim, the AI processes it in minutes, and payment arrives same-day for straightforward claims. Their approval rate and customer satisfaction scores beat traditional carriers handily for simple claims.

The model: Lemonade takes a flat fee (25% of premiums), uses the rest for claims, and donates unclaimed amounts to charities you choose (the “Giveback”). This eliminates the incentive to deny claims — theoretically. In practice, complex claims still go through human review.

Renters insurance through Lemonade starts at $5–8/month for basic coverage in most markets. Traditional renters insurance through USAA or State Farm runs $15–25/month for comparable coverage but with better financial ratings.

Life Insurance: Term4Sale and Ladder

Online term life insurance comparison has gotten genuinely good. Ladder offers fully underwritten term life with no medical exam for coverage up to $3 million (for healthy applicants), competitive rates, and the ability to reduce coverage as your financial obligations decrease.

Policygenius aggregates quotes from 30+ carriers. The only warning: some online brokers steer you toward higher-commission products. Get at least three quotes, understand the difference between term (pure protection, usually the right answer) and whole life (investment component, usually overpriced).

What Insurtech Still Doesn’t Do Well

Complex commercial insurance, umbrella liability policies, and health insurance all still benefit from a human broker who can explain the fine print. The technology is best applied to commoditized personal lines — auto, renters, term life — where pricing is more standardized.

  • Best auto savings: Root (behavior-based), Progressive Snapshot
  • Best renters insurance UX: Lemonade
  • Best life insurance comparison: Policygenius
  • Best digital term life: Ladder
